How to set up the new Entity Store in AX 2012 R3 CU11


  1. AX 2012 R3
  2. CU11 or KB3147499
  3. SQL 2014 BI Edition or higher, SQL 2016 BI Edition or higher
  4. SA access to SQL
  5. SA access in AX


Create Entity Store Database in SQL

  1. Open SQL Management Studio and connect to the SQL Instance
  2. Right Click on the Database node and select New Database

Enable SQL client Protocols

  1. Open SQL Server Configuration Manager
  2. Expand SQL Native Client 11 (or 12) Configuration
  3. Right click on “Client Protocols”
  4. Select Properties
  5. Push “Names Pipes” & “TCP/IP” to the enabled sidebh-pic-2
  6. Click apply.
  7. Click OK.

Setup ODBC Connection

  1. Open Control Panel
  2. Open Administrative tools
  3. Open ODBC Data Sources (64-Bit)
  4. Pick User or System DNS and click “Add”
  5. Pick SQL Server
  6. Click “Finish” (it should say next but doesn’t)
  7. Enter a name and description
    1. >>> Recommendation: add the environment tag associated with the environment you are creating this Entity Store for. In this case “_DEMO”
  8. Enter the name of the SQL server
    1. >>> We have verified that “.” Will work if you are doing this all on the same server.
  9. Click Next
    1. >>> We recommend that you use Windows NT Auth
  10. Click Next
    1. >>> Check the “Change the default database to” checkbox, and select the Entity Store DB you created earlier. Don’t change anything else.
  11. Click Next
    1. >>> Don’t change anything here
  12. Click Finish 
  13. Click “Test Data Source” and make sure it completes.

AX Configuration

  1. Open AX
  2. Goto the Data Import Export Framework module
  3. Locate the “Entity Store” section
  4. Click on “Define Entity Store”
  5. Enter a Name and Description.
  6. Select User or System DNS based on where you created the ODBC connection earlier. Pick the name of the ODBC connection you created.
    1. >>> The connection string will auto populate.
  7. Click Validate
