New Deployment and Development Experience in D365 Wave 2

Microsoft is rolling out self-service deployment to existing customers with the D365 Wave 2 release. Previously, technical consultants were required to open a ticket with Microsoft to schedule their new environment deployment. This added to the wait time before an environment could be deployed.

With wave 2, users can now deploy their own environments within Lifecycle Services (LCS).

How will this happen?

To begin the process, Microsoft is contacting customers to coordinate migrating environments. Here’s a general idea of the process and timeline:

  • Microsoft will send a notification email 30 days prior to default sandbox migration
  • Microsoft will send a notification email 5 days prior to default sandbox migration
  • Default sandbox environment migration begins
  • After seven days, production migration begins

What's changing?

Users will no longer have access to server admin credentials on Tier 2+ environments. This means that remote desktop access will not be available.

Azure SQL access will still be available through Just-In-Time access on LCS. The user will be able to specify a reason to connect, which will be logged, and then will get a connection string that they can use to connect to the session.

Microsoft has made many operations self-service in LCS. This includes eliminating the need to RDP directly to the server. One scenario you should consider is that if you have certain ISV solutions that require separate IIS components, you'll need to ensure those are installed on separate servers within your network. Examples include SK Global's FileHub or BottomLine's Precision Forms.

Developers will also see changes in the wave 2 release. In November, Microsoft will release the capability to install D365 developer tools on local machines in public preview. Previously, each developer needed their own virtual machine and possibly multiple virtual machines for concurrent implementations. This change lets developers manage more than one code base on their local machine meaning one machine is all that’s needed, reducing costs for both partners and customers.

Zero downtime

With the transition to self-service deployments in wave 2, customers will be able to take advantage of zero-downtime updates going forward.

Customers will select a window in which the updates will take place, but users won’t have to be disconnected from the system. In fact, they shouldn’t notice a connection loss at all during the update. If a session did need to be disconnected to complete the update, the user would simply be notified to save their work and refresh their browser. Email notifications will be sent to let the customer know the status of the update and of course can also be viewed through LCS.

With self-service deployments, Microsoft is finally arriving at their goal of providing users a cloud ERP with zero downtime.
