Analyzing supply chain processes for D365

Measuring pick efficiency is just one of the performance indicators warehouse managers use to ensure teams are maximizing resources as they pick orders. But sometimes warehouse staff needs more flexibility to decide which pick line to work next so they can increase efficiencies.

For example, food often comes in different and complex packaging, making pallet building a time-consuming challenge. Different pallet types may call for varied item stacking orders to maximize pallet efficiency.

To help meet this challenge, Microsoft added Work Pick Line Overview in the 2020 Wave 2 release for Dynamics 365. This feature extends the existing Skip button by offering more advanced Work pick line processing.  System admins can define where in the warehousing app to show a list of all lines for the current work and allows workers to select which line to pick next.

Work Pick Line Overview Setup

Open the MDMI for outbound picking. You will see a new drop-down menu Show work line list.

Show work line list

Show work line list includes the following options:

  • Show only upon request: Workers can choose to see the list by selecting the "Skip to" button.
  • Show at the start of every pick: Workers see the list every time they start or complete a pick line and can see it again by selecting the "Skip to" button.
  • Show at the start of the first pick only: Workers see the list each time they start new picking work, but not after each line. They can see the list again by selecting the "Skip to" button.
  • Never show: Provides the standard "Skip" button, thereby disabling the work lines list display.

Additionally, a Field list sub-form is added to the MDMI. Here, you'll see the fields shown in the Work line list. These fields help the warehouse worker decide which line to pick next. Currently, values from the Work line fields and Work line methods are available for selection.

Leaving the Field list empty and using the feature results in the MD displaying only the Line number:

You cannot use the Skip button functionality and the Work line list at the same time.

Creating outbound pallets is more of an art than a rule. Food distributors, car parts distributors, and any other business with uneven packaging and various product weights will benefit the most from this feature. With the Work Pick Line Overview feature, your warehouse teams can choose which Pick line should be processed next.
